But Oliver argues that Trump’s misguided move could have one small, positive effect.

During Friday’s daily press briefing, both White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer and Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt said that they had not had a discussion with the president on his views on climate change and could not answer questions about what the president thought.

In Brussels, European Council President Donald Tusk said the EU is “stepping up our cooperation on climate change with China” following a summit with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. “Maybe, just maybe, we can now motivate ourselves to do something out of our loathing of this one”.

Dr Sam Gardner, acting director of WWF Scotland, said that while Trump’s announcement was “extremely disappointing”, the rest of the world was making clear that the accord would endure.

Key challenges include who will take the leadership after the U.S. leaves the pact, and who will fill the gap in funding that the U.S. should have contributed to the Green Climate Fund, a mechanism to assist developing countries in climate adaptation, according to Wang.

Pruitt spoke at a White House briefing the day after President Donald Trump said the USA will abandon the Paris climate accord. Oliver said. “If those companies really wanted to get his attention, they needed to talk KFC into giving out a full-bucket ad, which he would read on the toilet while eating chicken, because that – at its core – is who our president is”.

More than 1,000 governors, mayors, businesses and others are committing to uphold the goals of the Paris climate change agreement.

Here’s what his ambassador to the United Nations says: “President Trump believes the climate is changing”. Another tally puts the GDP hit at more than $8 trillion through 2100 – but that’s the damage estimated if the USA exits the deal.

Tillerson had reportedly been among the advisors encouraging Trump to remain in the deal, arguing that staying in was good for U.S. business while leaving would isolate the USA internationally.

“A friend of mine likes to say that a thermometer is neither a Republican nor a Democrat”, said Webb, who traveled to Paris for the signing of the accord in 2015 to raise awareness among the public that many evangelical Christians are concerned about climate change.

“He believes that climate is changing and he believes pollutants are part of that equation”.

“We, as Christians, are called to care for those who have the least”, said Reverend Mitch Hescox of the Evangelical Environmental Network. “China is willing to increase cooperation with all sides and jointly promote the follow-up talks on actual detailed rules of the Paris agreement”. Rather, it’s more likely that they seek to impose carbon-related tariffs on United States goods if these are deemed to be enjoying an unfair advantage because they are produced in an economy free of carbon restraints.
