India’s First Green Rail Corridor Launched in TN

The Rameswarm-Manamadurai (114 km) track was identified to make it free from human waste discharge from trains, and accordingly, 10 passenger trains consisting of 286 coaches moving over this section have been provided with bio-toilets, said an official statement.

After Rameswarm-Manamadurai, Okha-Kanalas Junction (141 km), Porbandar-Wansjaliya (34 km) and Jammu-Katra (78 km) would also be taken up for making them free from human waste discharge from trains.

He launched a traditional medicine centre under Ayush at Perambur Railway Hospital here, a broad gauge line between Thiruvallur and Thiruvalangadu stations on the Chennai-Arakkonam line.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday dedicated the first green train section between Rameswaram and Manamadurai through video conferencing from the Chennai Central railway station.

“We are very proud that as a part of Government, as a part of development of India, Indian Railways, we will contribute in a small little way to the development of this state”, said Prabhu.

Addressing a function here on Sunday, where eight projects in Tamil Nadu were inaugurated, the Minister remarked, “We want to do more for TN. I request the state government to provide us land for this project”.

The Minister will be touring Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh from 23 to 25 July.

Referring to high speed network plans, he cited increasing speed of trains from 110 to 160 kmph in the Chennai-Bengaluru sector, and between New Delhi and Chennai.

To develop the high speed network, work was on to devise strategies, one of which was using Talgo coaches and a trial with 180 kmph speed run with full load had been completed.

He said that he looks forward to develop Royapuram railway station as a terminal in the city.

The Rameswaram railway station, which handles 13 pairs of trains on a daily basis, has been developed as a “Green Station”. “For this, we are making it human defecation-free”, Prabhu said. “People will benefit and all of us will get revenue from this”, Mr. Prabhu said.
