India’s Modi Provokes Pakistan Over Terrorism Links in Independence Day Speech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday India was becoming the world’s most attractive destination for foreign investors, using his annual Independence Day speech to trumpet sweeping tax reforms created to spur growth.

The former external affairs minister said Balochistan was an internal matter of Pakistan.

The letter highlights the worldwide obligation of both the countries to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.

Modi avoided direct reference to Kashmir in his Independence Day speech, but he did criticise people in Pakistan for celebrating when what he called terrorist attacks were launched on Indian soil.

If the 77 crore incandescent bulbs sold in Indian households were switched to LEDs, the country could save 20,000 megawatt (25 billion KWh or units) of energy per year worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore, he said.

“The letter highlights the worldwide obligation of both the countries, India and Pakistan, to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions”, the statement said. He stated that a country big enough in size can not become great on its own.

Modi, despite a barnstorming campaign that carried him to the biggest electoral landslide in three decades in 2014, has so far failed to touch the rhetorical heights achieved by India’s first prime minister.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Monday his government had built more than 20 million toilets and brought electricity to thousands of villages as he delivered an Independence Day report card.

This, Sartaj added, was also confirmed after the public confession of RAW’s active service naval officer, Kulbhushan Yadav, in March this year.

“Balochistan is a different thing from PoK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir)”.

India had blamed the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Muhammad group for the attack.

Coming up with innovative campaigns has been Mr Modi’s forte during Independence Day speeches.

He said out of eight proposed segments of dialogue with India, Pakistan would always give priority to Kashmir issue. “From the ramparts of the Red Fort, I want to express my gratitude to some people – the people of Balochistan, Gilgit and Pak-occupied-Kashmir – for the way they whole-heartedly thanked me, the way they expressed gratitude to me, the way they conveyed their goodwill to me recently. It requires a political solution, through serious negotiations between India and Pakista”, he said.

“India is behind terrorism, militancy and anti-peace activities in Balochistan”, he alleged. “Our government is planning to open museums all over the country to glorify their role so that future generations can know about their sacrifices”, said the PM said.
