India’s prime minister Narendra Modi heading to Pakistan on brief visit
Modi’s Lahore visit should now contribute to a conducive atmosphere for the talks. PIA provided handling to Modi’s plane. He then took a chopper to proceed to Sharif’s Raiwind palatial residence in the outskirts of Lahore. Modi wished Sharif on his birthday (December 25) and discussed different aspects of bilateral relations.

“Any step toward trying to stabilize and provide a new beginning to India-Pakistan ties is welcome and needs to be supported by all those who believe that India and Pakistan have a common destiny and it is in their interest to fight together their common problems, including terrorism and economic under-development”, he said.
Adding to the political theater was that it was Sharif’s birthday and his granddaughter’s wedding day.
“This visit indicates that he wants good relations between the two neighbours”, Haroon said.
Modi will be the first Indian prime minister to visit Pakistan since 2004.
It is the first time an Indian PM has visited the rival nation in almost a decade.
“Security in Lahore has been put on high alert”, a senior police official told PTI. Personnel of elite police were deployed around the airport.
The source said Sharif’s mother also entered the hall where both premiers were holding the meeting along with his other family members.
“Looking forward to meeting PM Nawaz Sharif in Lahore today afternoon, where I will drop by on my way back to Delhi”, Modi wrote on Twitter.
“Welcome to Pakistan @narendramodi”.
The chairman of the opposition Pakistan People’s Party, Bilawal Bhutto, said in a tweet, “Constant engagement is the only way to resolve all outstanding issues”.
He added that the meeting is likely to have been preceded by some “behind the door” preparation. “Details are being worked out”. Earlier this month, the national security advisers of both countries met secretly in Bangkok, away from the media’s glare.
“But let me say one thing about the Prime Minister that he is a kind of a leader who has shown mirror to every politician, a mirror which tells them that they are not as hardworking and honest towards the country as he has been”, he said. “And, all of us in the region – India, Pakistan, Iran and others – must unite… behind this common objective”, Modi said.
As soon as the Prime Minister announced that he would be flying down to Lahore, from former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and Separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq welcomed the decision.
Modi and Sharif agreed to promote people-to-people contacts and confidence building measures.
