India’s Reliance announces launch of 4G mobile services

On Thursday, Mukesh Ambani unveiled tariff plans under which all subscribers under the “welcome offer” will be entitled to benefits such as access to unlimited 4G data and national voice, video and messaging services, including national roaming, along with the full bouquet of Jio apps and content, completely free up to December 31, 2016.

The pricing, which analysts are terming as a “knockout punch” are estimated to be as low as one-tenth of the prevailing data rates depending on the customer’s data usage. Reliance Industries asked incumbent telecom service providers to provide adequate interconnect points in their network to ensure calls from Jio subscribers go through to their users, and said it will begin reporting operator-wise call failures on its website.

In August, Airtel made voice calling free even in roaming under a new plan for Rs 1,199 which also included 1GB of 3G or 4G data depending on availability of network. “I don’t mind paying Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 for the sim card as the “Jio Welcome Offer” is really alluring”, Roshni, a chartered accountant, told the daily.

The company has also filed the tariff plans for wireless services with TRAI.

“We expect and hope that following commencement of services by Jio, the incumbent operators would fulfil their obligations to provide adequate interconnection and MNP facility”.

“As a responsible operator, we will fulfill all our regulatory obligations as we have always done”, it added.

The new offer seems to be injustice compared to Preview Offer, but seeing from the company’s perspective, it was bound to happen as offering truly unlimited data for potential 100 million users would take quite a toll on system servers.

Much has been spoken about the unbelievably low price offers that Reliance Jio is offering to its customers. “They will be less anxious about data consumption and charges and will be more inclined to consume the content they enjoy”, he said.

Other plans would be available for Rs 129 (prepaid only), Rs 299 (prepaid only), Rs 499, Rs 999, Rs 1,499, Rs 2,499, and Rs 3,999.

Speaking at the Reliance Industries’ 42th Annual General Meeting, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said data must be “affordable” and that Reliance Jio’s effective rates will be Rs 50 per GB. You can’t expect more now, can you?
