India says search for attackers at air base still not over
Intermittent firing continued in the air base on Monday, with fresh enforcements being rushed in.

A joint combing operation by the armed forces, police and security personnel is still underway and the NIA has taken over the probe.
As night fell, it was unclear whether two or more militants were still at large after Saturday’s pre-dawn raid on the Pathankot air base in Punjab.
The attackers used an Indian police officer’s auto, which was apparently hijacked the previous evening, to infiltrate the air force facility.
Pathankot: At least two more Jaish-e-Muhammed (JeM) terrorists are said to be holed up in Pathankot’s Indian Air Force base as security forces continued their operations for the second day on Sunday with military casualties mounting to seven, including a Lieutenant Colonel of the NSG who died on Sunday. Security guards conducted air surveillance of the air base. A Garud commando and two members of the DSC were killed in the gunbattle on Saturday in which four Pakistan-based terrorists had also been eliminated during the gunbattle at the airbase, located barely 35 km from the Indo-Pak border. He said they were quickly engaged by Indian troops and “were unable to move toward their likely intended target” of the area where the base’s aircraft and military equipment are kept.
India accuses Pakistan of arming and training the insurgents, a charge Islamabad denies, and the attack is being viewed as a possible attempt to unravel recent progress in the relationship between the two nations.
-Vital air force assets – MiG-21 Bison fighters and Mi-35 attack helicopters – were safe following advance intelligence about the attack.
“Every time there is a movement toward normalization of relationship with Pakistan, these things automatically happen, because these are forces that don’t want peace between India and Pakistan and also in the region”, Kohli said. India is likely to inform Pakistan that terror and talks can’t go further without action on these groups. The firing was still continuing, police officials said.
The attack by gunmen disguised as soldiers came a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an unscheduled visit to Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in an effort to revive talks between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar on Sunday met several top retired diplomats for a consultation on what would be India’s best strategy to deal with Pakistan on the diplomatic front. “A decision would be taken after assessing the extent of Pakistan’s role”, government sources said. Coming a week after PM Modi’s “spontaneous” visit to Pakistan, the attack has triggered a debate over ties with the neighbouring country. In the past, when it was in opposition, Modi’s own right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party was a vocal critic of engagement with Pakistan.
