India set to lose no.1 ranking as day four abandoned

Only 22 overs have been possible in the first three days of a match India – leading the series 2-0 – need to win to prevent Pakistan from replacing them at the top of the Test rankings.

The first inspection was scheduled at 10, and the umpires deemed the ground unfit for any cricket for a third day running.

For the third straight day, the umpires decided a soggy outfield was in an unsatisfactory condition at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.

Virat Kohli’s men have been on a roll in the Carribean having already secured the four-match Test series with victories at Antigua and St Lucia, and were on top for much of the rain-affected second Test at Jamaica as well.

In case of a draw between India and West Indies, which now seems imminent, India will lose the number one spot in the ICC Test team rankings.

The hosts got off to a poor start, losing opener Leon Johnson (9) and one-down Darren Bravo (10) cheaply to seamer Ishant Sharma and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin respectively. Though the day began on a bright and sunny note, the outfield remained water-logged due to overnight rains and many areas around were dug up to dry in sunshine in the absence of super sopper with the ground staff for faster drying.

The facilities here have been questionable, since the ground staff didn’t cover anything but the square on day one, thus letting the bowlers’ run-ups be soaked.
