India sweep cycling gold medals on third day again

Host country India continued to dominate on the third day of the 12th South Asian Games as they maintained their top position in the medals tally with 24 Gold medals.

The Lankans are also hoping to have a better haul than the 22 medals (8 gold, 8 silver, 6 bronze) they had won last time. Holding on to a distant second spot were Sri Lanka with 84 medals, including 17 gold, 36 silver and 31 bronze medals. Sabira virtually set the tone for the rest of the day for Bangladesh, who won one silver from wrestling and eight bronze medals- four from the pool while two each from wresting and weightlifting.

While compound archers scooped all five gold medals on offer, wrestlers also annihilated competition to grab five yellow metals out of six.

In the recurve section finals, men’s and women’s teams will clash against Sri Lanka for the gold medal.

There are three other Olympic bound athletes in the Indian squad.

The dashing Delhi-lad then paired up with Purvasha to hammer the Bangladeshi pair of Sushmita Banik and Mohammad Anowerul Kadar 156-138 for his second and India’s third gold. Khade also bettered his own Dhaka mark with an effort of 23.54 secs but had to be content with the silver.

Swan completed the competition in 2:48.85.

Mohd. Mahfizur Rahman of Bangladesh was third in 17:12.0.

Saurabh Sangvekar started the gold-winning streak for India, setting a new Games record of 3:58.84 seconds to win the 400m freestyle for men. J Silva of Sri Lanka was third in 05:44.20.

Hasanthi Nugawela gave Sri Lanka another silver medal when she clocked 02 minutes and 49.6 seconds in the Women’s 200m Breast Stroke event, just 00.4 seconds ahead of Romana Akter of Bangladesh, who won the bronze.

The lone bronze victor for India was Chahat Arora in women’s 100m breastroke.

Indian Archery team won all the five gold medals in the recurve event at 12th South Asian Games in Shillong today.

She lifted a total of 169kg (79kg in snatch + 90kg in clean and jerk). Tara Devi Pun of Nepal took the bronze with a total lift of 165 kg. M Arvind struck gold in the men’s 200m backstroke event.

Sri Lanka’s football win against India comes after a lapse of ten years. Sufiyan Abu of Pakistan won the bronze with a total lift of 275 kg (124kg + 151kg).

Kiran Jayasinghe won bronze in the 100 meters Men’s Breaststroke event.

Thusharika Priyadharshani won a Bronze in the 40 kilometre Cycling Criterium event. Semifinals: India bt Pakistan 3-0; Sri Lanka bt Bangladesh 3-0.

At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium hall, the Indian eves team comprising Monika Batra, Mouma Das and K. Samini beat Raheela Kasif, Shabnam Bibi and Ayesha Ansari of Pakistan in straight sets. In Men’s Hockey, India lost to Pakistan, 1-2 in the round-robin match today.
