India takes up students’ deportation issue with US
Air India has referred to the External Affairs Ministry the communication from American authorities about two universities there being under “scrutiny” that prompted it to bar 19 students from boarding its flight to San Fransisco so they were not “inconvenienced”.

The students, on the other hand claimed, that their classmates have already reached the university and have not faced any such issue.
The official further said Air India will accept students of the two universities- Silicon Valley University and Northwestern Polytechnic College- on its flights to San Francisco only when they got the go ahead from its US Office. The tales of the 14 students deported from the San Francisco airport – for the same reason – weren’t any different.
Also, they argued that the how can the airlines deny them having ticket despite having visas.
When contacted, an immigration official at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport said his department had nothing to do with the students not being allowed to board the flight.
They said there was increased security and questioning at the port of entry in view of the recent terrorist attacks.
“Students travel on a one-way ticket to United States and in the event of deportation, the student incurs huge expenditure to buy a ticket back to India on first available service”.
The airline added in a statement that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency warned the airline the day of the flight that the students were not allowed in America and would be deported back to India.
“We have seen reports regarding deportation of Indian students from San Francisco”.

“We were treated like criminals and sent back”, one student, who did not give a name, told the Times of India. Last week, there were reports of 14 Indian students heading to the same universities being deported from the USA after being detained and questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for around 15 hours in San Franscisco. At this time, we don’t have any further information to share with you on this particular issue, but we are seeking clarity on the situation. It is the airline’s responsibility to clear passengers. “If the US Consulate after interviews issued us visas, we are entitled to our right to travel to the US”.
