While there are three T20 internationals slated at the start of the series, the focus for both Dhoni and selectors will be on World T20 which will be held in India in five months time.
Gurkeerat scored a century and picked up a five wickets in the first unofficial ODI and Aravind took 3-29 in the same match.
The selectors, who met in Bangalore on Sunday afternoon, said they had not contemplated any change in the captaincy, with MS Dhoni returning to lead the ODI and T20I squads after Virat Kohli had captained India to a Test series win in Sri Lanka.
Rookie Punjab all-rounder Gurkeerat Singh Mann today earned his maiden India call-up while Karnataka seamer Srinath Aravind staged a comeback after four years as Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced its squads for the three T20 Internationals and the first three ODIs for the upcoming home series against South Africa. Ravindra Jadeja, another of Dhoni’s trusted lieutenants in the recent past, has been off the radar in both the series and though he didn’t figure in the “A’ squad either, Dhoni’s pull may swing things for the all-rounder”. The likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohit Sharma, Dhoni’s preferred options in the shorter formats, will be certainties.
Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was recalled to the T20 squad while leg-spinner Amit Mishra was named in both the squads after his impressive show in Sri Lanka.
While Umesh Yadav has been included in the ODI squad, Varun Aaron was not considered for selection in any of the squads. Shami last played for India during the 2015 World Cup and has since, been sidelined from all forms cricket.
