India vows to meet commitments to climate change: Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Nearly a third of India’s population remains in severe poverty with limited access to electricity, and its government sees little chance of boosting their prospects without turning to cheap and plentiful coal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi releasing “Parampara” – a book on India’s climate friendly and sustainable practices – at the Paris conference. “That also means strong public commitment by suppliers to developing countries”, Modi said.

The meeting was the first between the two leaders after July when they had met in the Russian city of Ufa and had agreed that their National Security Advisors would meet.

Modi then lectured the developed countries: “The principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities must remain the bedrock of our collective enterprise across all areas – mitigation, adaptation and means for implementation”.

The Nation in its front page headline ‘Pak-India climate change in Paris?’ wrote: “The prime ministers of Pakistan and India met and shook hands at the climate change summit on Monday, igniting hopes for melting of ice between the two nuclear neighbors”.

This alliance of 122 countries lying between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn has been formed to collectively harness the power of the Sunday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday outlined India’s plans to reduce carbon emissions and said India has advanced targets to cut carbon emissions and switch to clean energy, but said the country reserved its right to development and progress like developed countries. “PM meets many Heads of State/Govt”, added Swarup, who also posted pictures of Modi meeting and greeting several of his counterparts from around the world. “By the end of next year, we would have added 12 GW”, he said.

Modi said: “Climate justice demands that, with the little carbon space we still have, developing countries should have enough room to grow. But we must also lead in combating climate change”, said Modi, while assuring 40 percent of India’s installed energy capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030. Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar described the comments as “unwarranted” sparking off a potential face-off likely in Paris. The brief meeting may help to arrange a cricket series between their teams in Sri Lanka next month and participation by India in the Heart of Asia Conference in Islamabad next week, some media reports said.
