The sun was out, and in very warm conditions, Gabriel and Jason Holder provided some excitement.
Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo was also impressive, making the ball turn sharply to cause plenty of trouble for the batsmen.
A few quiet overs passed, and a frustrated Rahane top-edged a short delivery from Bishoo, but Chandrika failed to hold on to the chance at point.
It proved to be costly miss as Rahane thumped Holder to the fence twice in the next over.
Rain interrupted proceedings for just over an hour in the post-lunch session. However, Rahane stitched up another partnership with Amit Mishra before Roston Chase dismissed the leggie and Mohammad Shami off successive balls. He reached his seventh Test century with a streaky outside edge that ran along the ground between keeper and slip, off the bowling of Chase. He has now scored a Test century in six different countries. The latter though was out, hitting the ball high in the air and was caught at short midwicket, as Chase completed his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket. The ninth wicket brought about the declaration and it also brought the rain causing the final session to be washed out.
The rain arrived for a second time in the afternoon not long after Virat Kohli called his men in, forcing early tea to be taken to provide some respite for a West Indies side that was put through the wringer in the field. At the time of going to print, KL Rahul (102 batting) compiled a magnificent hundred as India reached 171/1.
Lokesh Rahul of India connects for a run off West Indies bowler Kraigg Brathwaite as wicket keeper Shane Dowrich moves in on day 2 of the 2nd Test between India and the West Indies on July 31, 2016 in Kingston, Jamaica. “He (Rahul) has two Test centuries in two countries, and it doesn’t really matter because two Test centuries are huge”.
The 28-year-old batsman’s other overseas hundreds have come in New Zealand (Wellington), England (Lord’s), Australia (Melbourne) and Sri Lanka (Colombo).
Resuming on an overnight score of 126/1, things become tough in the first session courtesy a brilliant opening spell led by Shannon Gabriel and others.
Their sixth-wicket partnership was worth 98 runs and further solidified India’s already dominant position in the match, even though they were again kept to a pedestrian scoring rate with only 67 runs added in the two hours of play. I was spinning some balls and straightening some of them as well. In the first Test match we bowled in good areas and we bowled consistently.
The Karnataka-born is continuing to enjoy a good season with the bat.

Even as the batsmen looked for runs, they had to take some risks, and in doing so Pujara was run-out after a direct throw from square-leg found him short of the crease at the non-striker’s end. India, which won the first match convincingly, dominated the proceedings very early.
