Indian filmmaker sentenced to seven years for rape

Farooqui was convicted last week after the woman complained that he was drunk and raped her at his house in the Indian capital where she had gone for help with her thesis research.

The prosecution had sought maximum punishment of life imprisonment for Farooqui.

Farooqui was convicted for the rape of an American woman, who a research scholar from the US.

But high levels of sexual violence against women continue. “She then froze. She knew if she resisted the rape upon her, the effect would be worse”, seemingly implying that Farooqui had forced the graduate student to perform oral sex on him rather than vice-versa, a fact that wasn’t expressly noted in most Indian media sources.

Farooqui too has rubbished all such charges against him.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 on Farooqui. The filmmaker, who at the time of the conviction was out on bail, was taken into custody soon after the court found him guilty.

“In the light of the above findings, it is safely held that the testimony of the prosecutrix being truthful and credible and can be relied upon as being of sterling worth for the goal of the conviction”, said Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Sanjiv Jain.

During the trial, the woman alleged that after raping her, Farooqui had apologised via multiple emails.

“The amendment to the criminal law in 2013 introduced forced oral sex”. Farooqui was also accused by police of destroying evidence against him. “We’re also very happy to see that the court relied on very credible evidence that the woman gave”. During the final arguments, Grover had told the court that the complainant knew that if she resisted, the “consequences would be worse”.
