Indian Fishermen Arrested in Sri Lanka for Poaching

One mechanised boat and two country boats belonging to fishermen were also seized by the navy personnel.

The boats have been handed over to the Mannar police and fisheries officials for further action, the Navy said.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said the Centre’s “inadequate response” to apprehension and detention of Indian fishermen “has emboldened the Sri Lankan Navy to harass” them, and sought a “robust diplomatic response” on the emotive issue.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had also written letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling for appropriate actions for a permanent solution to the recurring arrests. She reiterated that the fishing boats and gear should be restored in a refurbished condition to the fishermen at the earliest.

She requested PM Modi to direct the Ministry of External Affairs to secure the immediate release of 96 Indian fishermen and 82 fishing boats.

In another incident, the navy from Kankesanthurai arrested five Rameswaram fishermen with their trawler when they were fishing off Delft island.

Sri Lanka said on Sunday it had detained 23 Indian fishermen who were arrested for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
