Indian lawyers again go after student leader, scribes

JNU Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar’s mother Meena Devi on Thursday slammed the attack on her son in the Patiala House Court premises and questioned who will be responsible if he dies in custody.

A two Judge Bench of the Supreme Court Today refused to entertain the Bail Application filed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar. He sought the apex court’s intervention to protect his life and limb.

Hundreds of police were deployed at the Patiala House court in Delhi ahead of Kumar’s appearance, after students, academics and journalists were attacked when they turned out to see him on Monday.

During the hearing, the investigating officers moved the application requesting the court to send Kanhaiya to judicial custody, saying he was not required for any custodial interrogation. Lawyers gathered on Wednesday attacked Kanhaiya and later demanded that the student leader be “given to them”.

Senior advocate Rajeev Dhawan submitted that Mr. Kumar came directly to the Supreme Court for bail because his fears are “bonafide and based on facts”. “The Supreme Court is safest of courts”, Mr. Dhawan said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gandhi, at a brief media interaction in the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, termed the JNU incident and violence in the court as a “blot” on India’s image.

Kanhaiya is being represented in the Supreme Court by top lawyers Raju Ramachandran and Soli Sorabjee, the former Attorney General of India.

On 16 February, Indira Jaising senior lawyer pointed regarding the plea before T S Thakur Chief Justice, who agreed for the hearing on February 17. Chairman of the Bar Council Manan Kumar Misra submitted that the assault on journalists by lawyers was a very serious issue and the bar council would take stringent disciplinary action against the erring lawyers.

While Delhi Police has identified all students who indulged in anti-Indian sloganeering inside JNU on February 9, raid is being conducted in five states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir.

“No fair trial possible in Patiala House Court”.

Police said the rally was not authorized, but allowed the march to proceed to a central space used frequently for public protests.

Many were outraged by nationally televised scenes of Kumar being kicked and punched while he was escorted to a court hearing Wedneday, renewing allegations of intolerance by the country’s Hindu nationalist governing party.
