As the current tenure of CMD Rohit Nandan’s one-year extension ends today, Ashwani Lohani will be appointed the new CMD of the state run carrier.

In 2012, the government had announced an Rs 30,000 crore bailout package for Air India.
With the appointment of Lohani, the government has made it clear that it still cannot come around to tasking an aviation professional with the job of turning around an ailing airline.
Mr. Lohani belongs to the Indian Railways Service of Engineers.
Nandan was at the helm for three-and-a-half years and is credited with getting Air India to post an operational profit for the first time after the erstwhile Air India and Indian Airlines merged in 2007.

Air India reported a net loss of Rs 5,547.47 crore in 2014-15 on the back of total revenues of Rs 19,781 crore.
The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved appointment of Mr. Lohani, a 1980 batch IRSME officer, as CMD, Air India Ltd, for tenure of three years, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training said.
A qualified mechanical engineer, Lohani is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
