External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted Saturday that Judith D’Souza was free.

He had tweeted last last night about the Indian government’s efforts to bring back his sister.

D’Souza was abducted on June 9, while she was returning home in Kabul.

“I am happy to inform you that Judith D’souza has been rescued”, Ms Swaraj tweeted this morning.

Her family had earlier written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to do his utmost to secure her release. Modi had requested Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to expedite efforts to secure Judith’s release. A very calculated move, by which they can kill the snake as well as not break the stick, by using Afghan militants who will never ask for ransom money. We can’t share that.

Judith’s brother Jerome D’Souza too took to Twitter to thank the Indian government and the people for their wishes. There is also the risk of kidnapping and hostage taking throughout the Afghanistan. Before becoming a gender specialist, she worked on child rights, climate change and several other social issues.
