Indiana Gov. Signs Into Law Severe, Totally Unenforceable Restrictions on Abortion Rights

Pence signed into law a measure aimed at reducing the complexity of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ fee structure, which came after an audit past year found the agency had overcharged motorists more than $60 million since 2013. Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders scolded the bill and Pence, using his campaign Twitter account to say, “The decision to have an abortion is for a woman to make, not the Governor of in”.

Abortion doctors also must comply with numerous additional paperwork requirements under the law, including having records of their hospital admitting privileges distributed to employees at every hospital in their county and each adjacent county.

The law would also prohibit abortions from being performed because of a fetus’s race, sex or ancestry.

“Some of my most precious moments as governor have been with families of children with disabilities, especially those raising children with Down syndrome”, said Pence. The law is set to take effect in July, and it is believed that pro-abortion rights organizations will try to challenge the law in court. The governor signed it into law on Thursday. If he does not sign or veto the bill, it will still become law on Friday. In its aftermath, his political stock plummeted, and he is now engaged in a re-election race that many expect to be close.

BTW, women don’t have to list a reason for having an abortion in IN, so this ruling may not actually have much effect, but people are still pretty upset. Opponents of the law also fear women may have to undergo complex procedures during their pregnancy to support the fetus, which would needlessly pose a danger to their health, reported WISTV. Seven states prohibit abortion based on the unborn child’s gender and Arizona is the only other state to include stipulation based in the race of the child, according to the Guttmacher Institute. He said there was recognition that the Medical Malpractice Act could be ruled unconstitutional without an increase in caps, as has happened in other states.

At issue is controversial language added by the Senate barring abortions performed exclusively because of a fetus’ characteristics.

This is one of the most extreme anti-abortion measures in the country and only further penalizes in women and their doctors.

“It’s disgraceful that politicians in IN want to shame a woman who may choose to end a pregnancy following diagnosis of a lethal fetal anomaly”, said Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards in a March statement about the bill.
