Howard County Sheriff Steven Rogers says Deputy Carl Koontz died at an Indianapolis hospital after being shot about 12:30 a.m. Sunday at a mobile home in Russiaville, about 60 miles north of Indianapolis.
Sergeant Jordan Buckley and Deputy Carl Koontz knocked at the door of a mobile home in Russiaville on Sunday around 12:30am but no one answered, Fox 59 reported. Rogers said one is in serious condition and the other is in critical condition. He said both officers were wearing body armor.
After a SWAT stand-off, ISP said the shooter is dead.
The Howard County Sheriff’s Department and the Russiaville Town Marshall were attempting to serve a warrant for drug paraphernalia and an arrest warrant.
A second deputy who was shot is said to be stable and alert. The deputies returned fire and the suspect was killed, but has yet to be identified.
RIGHT NOW: A major police presence where two officers were shot earlier tonight in Howard Co. The deceased Karl Koontz had garnered almost three years of service with the Howard County Sherrif’s Office. “As police officers we anticipate things like that, but it comes as a total surprise to us”.
During a 7:00am news conference, Sheriff Rogers said Sgt. Jordan Buckley, a 9-year veteran with the department, was in stable condition.
Dispatchers have not confirmed the condition of the officers but both were taken to an Indianapolis hospital. The officers fired back, according to the press release.
“Officers had obtained a search warrant for the Chandler residence based on information the resident was wanted on an outstanding warrant”, he said, noting the warrant was from Clinton County for possession of a syringe.
Governor Mike Pence said flags should remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of Koontz’s funeral and asked businesses to do the same.

Those efforts continued for almost two hours before the suspect was found dead, noted Rogers.
