Indianapolis bus crash kills 1 adult, hurts 2 children

School Supt. Shawn Smith announced later Tuesday afternoon that the adult victim in the crash was Beverland Principal Susan Jordan. She says one bus went over a curb and struck Jordan and two 10-year-old children.

Reith told CBS News Radio that the bus driver said Jordan pushed students to safety before she was hit.

It is so far unclear what caused the accident, but the driver was said to be working with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Fatal Alcohol and Crash Team in the investigation. They were taken to a hospital but their injuries were not life-threatening. Jordan was helping load kids for ride home, when one of the buses suddenly jumped the curb.

“This is a great example of an educational leader in our state and our city…”

RTV6 reports that the two kids who were injured were outside of the bus as well as the adult who was killed.

Last May, the students and staff at Amy Beverland Elementary School told her exactly how they felt about her in a video. Just a phenomenal individual that truly cared about children.

“A is for awesome, because you’re an awesome principal”, a student says referring to Susan Jordan.

It was not immediately clear what services the district would have for students Wednesday, Smith said, but “we’ll have a lot of support wrapped around them”.

In an appreciation video posted to YouTube a year ago, students and staff at her school thanked Jordan and talked about what made her a success. They may park at the ELC-AB and come over to Amy Beverland if they want to pick up their student.
