The Indians seem unlikely to receive any further contributions from catcher Yan Gomes in 2016. The injury will not require surgery.
An MRI revealed that Gomes suffered a non-displaced fracture in his right wrist when he was plunked during a rehab game on Wednesday.
Manager Terry Francona confirmed that the Brazilian backstop has fractured his right wrist prior to Friday’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers. This marks the second year in a row that he has had a season shortened due to injury.
Gomes also had a hard season at the plate, batting.165 with eight homers and 32 RBIs in 71 games.

The 29-year-old appeared in only 95 games last season, as he missed six weeks with a knee sprain. Gomes had a.231/.267/.391 slash line with 22 doubles, 12 homers, and 45 RBIs in 95 games. With a Gomes return now off the table, the Tribe will continue to cast their lot with the tandem of Roberto Perez and Chris Gimenez behind the plate, neither of whom bring much to the table from an offensive standpoint. Francona credited Gomes “with willing himself back” before the latest injury. He is a former Silver Slugger victor, and has one of the prettiest swings in baseball (when healthy.)
