Indians land lefty reliever, denied All-Star catcher

A trade with the New York Yankees brought Andrew Miller to town, while it appeared a deal was in place to bring in Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy as well.

Trades are coming fast and furious on the day before the deadline.

The Indians may not be done sending them. Yan Gomes, Roberto Perez, and Chris Giminez are slashing a combined.167/.215/.286 with a 5.5 percent walk rate and a 24.8 percent strikeout rate. They’re all onboard. They know they’ll be pitching with the lead or with a tie. Even with Gomes and Perez playing effective defense, it can not make up for the black hole they have been in the lineup.

Miller is now a member of the Indians, but Lucroy headed to the Texas Rangers after vetoing a trade to the Indians.

The 30-year-old Lucroy is batting.300 with 13 homers and 50 RBIs. “I’m not going to change one bit, whatever they ask me to do, hopefully do it up to their standards”. The opposition is hitting.183 against him. The news that they lost an All-Star reliever, a clubhouse presence less than a week after Chapman was dealt, was still processing.

Ariya Jutanugarn won the Women’s British Open on Sunday at Woburn for her first major championship, and fourth LPGA Tour victory of the year.

The move is something that had been talked about for a while as the Indians have been looking at relief pitchers all summer to bolster a bullpen that’s been the one Achilles heel of the club.

The other two pitchers acquired in the trade, right-hander reliever J.P. Feyereisen and left-handed starter Justus Sheffield, will report to Double-A Trenton and High-A Tampa, respectively. I am not a fan of losing just about any of those prospects, but the benefit to the Indians has the potential to be huge.

With due respect to outfielder Brandon Guyer, acquired from Tampa Bay on August 1, the big fish landed by Antonetti was 6-foot-7, left-handed reliever Andrew Miller. Good for the Tribe or did they give up too much?

Past year he had 36 saves with a 2.04 earned run average while fanning 100 hitters in 61.2 innings. This number would help the Indians, who are now 60-42 in their division, making their chances to the World Series clearer. They want to win it and they should win it, but if they happen to lose in what is essentially a crapshoot of three series over the course of a month, they are still very set for 2017 and potentially even 2018.

But it’s a damn good selloff. And that is before Michael Brantley returns from injury. However, the timing with Miller and the Yankees was just off.

Tyler Clippard’s career has spanned for 13 seasons as he has played for the Washington Nationals, New York Mets, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, and most recently the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Indians declined and at least for now Lucroy remains a member of the Brewers.

But Lucroy, who was in the final year of his contract with Milwaukee holding a contract option for 2017, made a decision to stay with the team that drafted him in 2007, according to the person familiar with the situation. The only key depatures after 2016 will be players who were signed to a one year deal, such as Mike Napoli and Rajai Davis. Winning the World Series is more that a goal for this organization, it is a requirement. “I been trying to work so hard on getting back on track and helping the team win”.
