Indians tie club record with 8 steals, rout Angels 13-3

Santana, who was out of the lineup against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, was standing behind the railing on the top step of the dugout when the ball hit him in the head.

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Tyler Skaggs delivers against the Cleveland Indians during the second inning of a baseball game Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, in Cleveland.

The Los Angeles Angels butt heads with the Cleveland Indians Saturday at Progressive Field.

Rajai Davis and Jose Ramirez each stole three bases, and Jason Kipnis and Francisco Lindor added steals for Cleveland to match the record that was first accomplished on August 27, 1917, against the Washington Senators.

The 8 steals are the most by the Indians since 1917, and the most any Angels team has ever allowed.

“You have to trust your instincts and go”, said Davis, the American League leader with 31 steals. “There’s something you look for and go off that”. Francona said the team will continue to monitor Santana’s progress and if any symptoms continue, Santana could be headed to the seven-day concussion list. “We’ll check him again in the morning”. We stole bases. We just didn’t run with abandon.

The Indians broke it open with a four-run fifth inning, the big hit in that rally being a two-out, two-run single by Guyer that gave Cleveland a 7-3 lead. They got those 13 runs because of a strategy put into place before the game began. Tribe starter Carlos Carrasco allowed all three runs on eight hits while striking out eight over seven innings. Carrasco gave up three runs on five hits over the first three innings, but held the Angels scoreless on three hits over his last four innings, retiring 15 of the last 18 batters he faced. Los Angeles mustered eight hits with Kole Calhoun going deep and scoring twice while Albert Pujols drove in two. The Indians took Tyler Skaggs out of his comfort zone tonight, and while it’s hard to know exactly which pitches were off because he was thinking about a runner on base, the results were clear. Ramirez duplicated the feat in the fourth.

But from there, with Davis, Ramirez and company almost running at will on the Angels, Carrasco and the Indians (65-48) cruised to their second 10-run win in as many nights after taking down LA 14-4 on Thursday.

“It’s a mixture of a lot of things, all of them my fault”, he said. Skaggs likes to use a high leg kick, and because of that is very slow to the plate. “I think Jhoulys was behind in every count, and he just could not get his ball into good position consistently”.

“That’s the kind of dynamic we’ve had here in this lineup”, Kipnis said.

Lindor stole second in the sixth with Deolis Guerra pitching. Soto sailed his throw into center field, which allowed Kipnis, who was on third, to easily score. Jose Ramirez would be unable to get Lindor home when he grounded out; the play could have been a double play, but Lindor deked the second baseman into throwing home instead of making the turn to first. He accepted the minor league option this week.

Angels: RHP Matt Shoemaker pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out 11 against the Indians on June 11 at Angel Stadium.

The Indians stole three bases in the first inning alone to cut an early Angles deficit to 2-1.
