Police said the 32-year-old woman was arrested in connection with an investigation into an alleged fraud against Sage.

The arrest follows the announcement two days ago that Sage had suffered the loss of customer data as a result of an insider breach.

This week, Sage, a provider of accounting and business software for companies worldwide, admitted to a data breach caused by someone accessing internal systems with employee credentials rather than an external cyberattacker.

The FTSE 100-listed British accountancy software firm said at the time that it believed it had suffered “some unauthorised access using an internal login to the data of a small number of our United Kingdom customers”.

The brief warning, released over the weekend, stated: “We believe there has been some unauthorised access using an internal login to the data of a small number of our United Kingdom customers so we are working closely with the authorities to investigate the situation”.

As has been reported, the data breach – or data leak to be more specific – may have affected around 280 businesses. Sage also claims that it is now unsure how the data was compromised.

“We can not comment further whilst we work with the authorities to investigate but our customers remain our first priority and we are speaking directly with those affected”, it added.
