Individuals, agencies dodge blame as Freddie Gray case ends

Gray encountered police officers in his own neighborhood and fled. It makes a variety of changes to the police disciplinary process, hiring and training.

Gray died a week after he was gravely injured in the back of a police van. The mayor has taken on a prominent role at the podium during the party’s convention in Philadelphia.

The full City Council will take up the spending next month.

Baltimore City alone will foot the bill, McCarthy said. “They’re using intimidation tactics rather than legal tactics”. When the latter failed to quell social tension, Maryland officials, in close coordination with figures from the Obama administration, brought charges against the officers in an effort to limit further protests.

Gene Ryan, president of Baltimore’s police union, called Mosby’s comments “outrageous”.

Earlier, State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby blamed police for a biased investigation that failed to produce a single conviction.

“Here, the failure to seat-belt may have been a mistake or it may have been bad judgement”, Williams said, “but without showing more than has been presented to the court concerning the failure to seat-belt and the surrounding circumstances, the state has failed to meet its burden to show that the actions of the defendant rose above mere civil negligence”.

As The Baltimore Sun noted, Mosby’s announcement means that the state’s attorney will not secure any convictions in the case in general, after more than a year of trying to hold someone in the BPD criminally responsible for Freddie Gray’s death. She said she thinks the anger will build and build in the community again because police aren’t being held accountable.

Gray’s death prompted protests and became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement. Police said no extra officers will work the streets Wednesday night. Three officers had been acquitted by a judge.

Mosby explained why she and her office made the decision, which she said was a hard one. Darden says police “lied, I know they lied, and they killed him”.

The family members “stand behind” Mosby and her prosecutors, said Richard Shipley, Gray’s stepfather, who attended Mosby’s news conference and said they “did the best to their ability”. She said “obvious questions” weren’t asked during interrogations. Mosby had promised “justice” for Gray’s death, which highlighted the inequalities experienced by black communities in the country.

Freddie Gray’s mother wasn’t on the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia Tuesday night, but she may as well have been. The prosecutor, Marilyn Mosby, announced earlier in the day that she was dropping charges against the remaining officers awaiting trial in the case. Mosby told 11 News the decision to drop the charges was not an easy one for her and her team.

Attorneys for the officers planned a news conference for later Wednesday.

During his arrest, officers placed Gray in the back of a police van, which made several stops. Three of the six officers charged in the case had already been acquitted.

The bench trials of Lt. Brian Rice and officers Edward Nero and Caesar Goodson both ended in full acquittals. The state also said the officers erred when they chose not to call a medic after Gray indicated he wanted to go to a hospital.

The Baltimore City Police Department’s probe ruled Gray’s death an accident.

The trial for an officer facing criminal misdemeanor charges stemming from the arrest and death of a young black prisoner whose neck was broken in the back of a police van is scheduled to begin. “No one is above the law”, she said as she read out charges that ranged from second-degree depraved-heart murder to manslaughter to second-degree assault.
