Just a few hours before landing in Lahore, Modi met with the Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani, and addressed the Afghan parliament in Kabul, in a visit that included explicit criticism of Pakistan for its role in sheltering the Taliban insurgency.
Asked about what transpired between the talks between the two heads, he said it was not a structured dialogue but an attempt to build atmosphere which was successful.
Sharif hugged Modi after he landed at the airport at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.
According to local media, Jindal has personal ties with Sharif and was invited for the marriage of Sharif’s grand- daughter.
While numerous discussions on the meeting between the Foreign Secretaries that will start the new comprehensive dialogue have been going back and forth between Islamabad and New Delhi for two weeks now, the Prime Ministers gave the green signal for the talks to be held at the earliest.
He said that any worldwide issue can not be resolved with static approach and new ways must be explored to resolve the disputes, Radio Pakistan reported. Tensions between Hindu-majority India and mostly Muslim Pakistan, home to 20 per cent of the world’s population, risk fuelling extremists in South Asia.
Some opposition leaders in India said Modi’s diplomacy should move beyond grandstanding and focus on tangible outcomes. The talks in Ufa were the first since Sharif attended Modi’s inauguration a year ago.
He said Kashmiri tea was presented to the Indian premier.
Sartaj Aziz on Saturday had said it would not be fair to expect much from the talks scheduled in Islamabad in January between the foreign secretaries of Pakistan and India.
“The goal behind this meeting was to humanise the other side by arranging a visit involving close family members”, said the official, adding some of Sharif’s cabinet had opposed the visit.
“The visit of Modi to Lahore yesterday will have far reaching effects on the lives of the border people”.
Reports say, India’s consent to hold bilateral talks in Islamabad is to prevent the Hurriyat leaders from becoming a major obstacle in the Indo-Pak engagement again.

Stop over at Lahore by Modi to personally extend birthday greetings to his counterpart is an exceptional magnanimous gesture, he said in an another tweet.
