The country’s deputy attorney-general Noor Rachmad told members of the press outside the Nusakambangan prison that one Indonesian and three Africans were executed by firing squad not long after midnight, local time, during a thunderstorm.
Indonesia on Thursday rejected mounting global pressure and desperate pleas from relatives to halt the execution of 14 drug convicts who are expected to imminently face the firing squad.
They were killed by firing squad after they were convicted for trafficking drugs, according to officials of the Indonesian government.
His comments came as 17 ambulances, 14 with coffins reached the Nusakambangan prison island in Central Java.
It was learnt that the four persons were shot by firing squad during a thunderstorm shortly after midnight on Nusakambangan Island in Central Java, as the government ignored worldwide calls for clemency and pushed ahead with what it considers a war on drugs.
“The executions are only aimed at halting drug crimes”, he said, adding that the rest “will be carried out in stages”.
The drug convict believes his execution will be put on hold if both countries put all differences aside and take up the matter on embassy level.
Indonesia has some of the world’s toughest drug laws, and has faced intense criticism internationally for resuming executions.
Executed were two Nigerians, one Senegalese and one Indonesian.
“This is not the first time that Nigerians in Indonesia are at risk of being executed, Nigerians have been executed in the past for drug related offences and Amnesty International opposes the death penalty under all circumstances and we don’t think that drug related offences are serious crimes to warrant the death penalty”.
Indonesian authorities have executed four convicted drug offenders, CNN affiliate CNN Indonesia reported Friday. Protests prompted President Widodo to tell countries like Australia and the Netherlands not to interfere with Indonesian sovereignty.
The executions were the third set carried out since President Widodo took office in October 2014.
Rights activists and governments have again called on Indonesia to abolish the death penalty.
For Indonesia, the death penalty is a positive law that is still effective here, and it’s not against human rights under the context of the 1945 constitution, ” Foreign Ministry spokesman, Armanatha Nasir said during a press conference. “It’s not very clear what actually were the last conclusions why these executions didn’t take place”.

“I need to emphasise that all the legal processes of the convicts have been completed, all their rights have been fulfilled – we target the drug traffickers and not users”, he said.
