Industry Baffled On How Uber Fatality Happened

The company’s website lists its pre-screening policies for drivers that spell out what drivers can and cannot have on their record to work for Uber. It ventures in the transport industry.

The company bans drivers who are convicted of violent crimes or any felony within the past seven years – which Vasquez would have passed given that records show the offenses occurred in 1999 and 2000.

Last week, Uber said it would stop self-driving tests in Arizona, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Toronto. Conversely, failures were noted in the system as it would sometimes give misleading descriptions.

Scarpinato said called Ducey’s action “aggressive” but declined to say if the governor was reconsidering requiring more oversight.

He said an autonomous auto should pull information from cameras, radar, and lidar independently, rather than fusing the information provided by all three into one data stream. These faults have become a worrying syndrome to the residents within its testing location as well as the clients. It was in autonomous mode at the time of the collision, with a vehicle operator behind the wheel. The company has a fleet of Chrysler Pacifica minivans with custom-designed hardware that undergoes rigorous testing, including in open and closed environments and through rigorous computer simulations, according to a Waymo spokeswoman.

He added that Waymo’s vehicles had clocked more than eight million kilometres (4.9 million miles) on routes frequented by pedestrians since 2009 without being involved in a fatal accident. He previously welcomed Uber and other autonomous vehicle companies to use Arizona as a place for testing under few, if any, regulations.

“We invite automakers, technology companies in the field, regulators, and other interested parties to convene so we can solve these important issues together”.

Doug Ducey speaks at the panel Pathways to Prosperity during the National Governor Association winter meeting on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, in Washington. Uber’s goals in Arizona were mentioned in internal documents – Arizona does not have reporting requirements – and it has not been testing self-driving cars in California long enough to be required to report them.

Uber’s first road tests in its self-driving vehicle effort, code-named Project Roadrunner, were actually in Pittsburgh last September.

Bares said he was not concerned about Uber’s self-driving program when he left.

In the days after the collision, both Waymo and Intel have come forward to explain how their autonomous systems would have reacted in the same situation. Chris Urmson, co-founder and CEO of Aurora Innovation and the former head of Google’s automated vehicle project, made that point at an economic summit last week.
