Industry News: Microsoft Details the Upgrade Plans for Windows 10

From what I’ve seen of the preview builds, Windows 10 isn’t quite ready.

The software giant has explained on its blog how the upgrade to Windows 10 will be rolled-out.

The last build released to members of the Windows 10 Insider Program Slow Ring was 10130 which became available to those users on 12 June 2015.

Myerson said the “vast majority of Windows 7 and 8 PCs will be fully compatible with Windows 10″. Even if you’ve signed up for Windows 10, you might not get it straight away.

Myerson also said that they will distribute a build of Windows 10 to retailers all over the world so that they can assist their customers with upgrades of newly purchased devices. At the time, some thought it might have been malware and closed the window. Individual users, on the other hand, will have to reserve their copies ahead of time. Unfortunately, those that are awaiting the free update might not be getting the update on July 29th. Native support for DVD playback is no longer supported, but you’ll be able to install third-party video players that can handle it. Windows Media Center isn’t available for Windows 10.

Microsoft has done a great job marketing their Windows 10 upgrade, although that’s pretty easy to do when the cost of the upgrade is free for most windows users.

Build 10162 – the third released to Insiders in four days – doesn’t offer anything in the way of new features, with Microsoft now in the process of adding ‘final polish.’.

This week, security experts raised concerns about a new feature in Windows 10 that allows users to automatically share access to their Wi-Fi network log-in credentials to friends and family wirelessly. “Hot on its heels though was Build 10159, which in addition to more fixes (over 300 of them!), took in one very interesting change”, said Microsoft engineer Gabe Aul in a blog post. Until now, Windows has been considered as a product, but starting with Windows 10, it is being marketed as a service.

Today, the company is chalking out how – and when – exactly people in different echelons will be able to snag a copy of Windows 10 for themselves.
