Activision is also aiming to launch the sixth entry in the Skylanders series in Fall 2016. Among the potential sequels, they can either develop a sequel to Ghosts, Advanced Warfare or go back and work on Modern Warfare 4.

As such, it was our hopes that Activision would stick with this plan by making Infinity Ward the developer of 2016’s installment.

The Call of Duty franchise, which kicked off in 2003, has now surpassed 250 million units sold life-to-date worldwide, with over $15 billion in total sales including DLC. Last month Brian Horton, the senior art director for the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and the director for 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider, left Crystal Dynamics for a new role with Infinity Ward. Now it’s official. Can’t wait to show you what we’ve been developing!

It is now not known what COD series they will be releasing this year, Infinity Ward have worked on both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty Ghosts franchises. With Treyarch delivering Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 in 2015 and Infinity Ward releasing a new Call of Duty game this year, it appears, then, that the pieces are lining up for a new game from Sledgehammer in 2017. Four of the top ten current-gen console games life-to-date are Call of Duty titles, and Black Ops 3 is number one.
