Injured Baylor RB Jefferson will not return this season

After rushing for 97 yards in Baylor’s season opener, Linwood needs 107 yards to break Walter Abercrombie’s school rushing record of 3,665 yards from 1978-81.

David Smoak of ESPN 1660 confirmed that junior running back Johnny Jefferson will not play for Baylor in 2016. Jefferson averaged 7.35 yards per carry past year en route to reaching the 1,000-yard mark.

Jefferson rushed for 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns last season as a sophomore, including 299 yards and three touchdowns in Baylor’s Russell Athletic Bowl victory over North Carolina.

A Doak Walker Award candidate entering the season, the 5-foot-10, 205-pound tailback has struggled with injuries this preseason.

Jefferson has been recovering from a foot injury as well as sore ribs from a vehicle accident and did not play in Baylor’s season opener against Northwestern State. He missed Baylor’s season-opening win over Northwestern State on September 2. Head coach Jim Grobe told reporters that he hopes Jefferson will be able to return to the team in the spring.

The good news, however, is that the team still has a workhorse back in Shock Lindwood and capable backups like sophomore Terence Williams and redshirt freshman JaMycal Hasty.
