In class on Tuesday, children quickly recalled seeing Padilla around the school. “We had officers shot today that are alive because of bulletproof vests and the Grace of God and for that we are all very thankful. The adrenaline is starting to wear off so they are starting to feel this a little bit more”, Parham said. He knows numerous children.

Officer Angel Padilla was brought to tears by the heartfelt thanks of third and fifth graders at Linden Elementary School 5 Thursday morning. “We had officers from other agencies show up”, he said.

But this is also his beat, and Monday was all business.

This is not the first time Hammer has responded when a fellow officer was shot. “The fact is that the timely apprehension of this suspect may well have saved others from being injured in another senseless bombing, and I would like to thank all of the officers involved for their heroic actions”. When they confronted him, Rahami allegedly opened fire.

Rahami was taken into custody after being injured in the altercation.

Because of the shootout, the 300-plus students here could not leave the school for three hours. “They were trying to get those guys, the one guy’s vest off”.

“I appreciate the risk you took on Monday to save my family, our community and my life”, one girl read. “I’m lucky he didn’t swerve right in here because we had the garage wide open”.

Rahami’s confrontation with police happened at about 10:30 a.m., when the owner of a Linden bar reported that someone was sleeping in a hallway of his establishment, Linden Mayor Derek Armstead told ABC New York station WABC-TV.

Padilla did take questions from students, but answered them with just a few words each.

“I think he’s a great hero and he’s inspiring us to be a hero too”, one girl said.
