The figure was lower than the revised 5.1 percent in August, and below the 6.1 percent level in September of a year ago, according to the EDD.

California’s unemployment rate fell to 5.9 percent in September, down from 6.1 percent in August and 7.3 percent a year earlier. Last month, the USA unemployment rate was 5.1 percent. Analysts say the rate of job growth has declined in the last four months, leading to the conclusion shown in the report. “While job growth, after accounting for normal seasonal trends, slowed appreciably both nationwide and in California as a whole, it accelerated in the local area”.

San Diego County’s economy added 46,900 nonfarm jobs over the past year, with the biggest gain in the professional, scientific and technical sector, which increased by 9,600 positions. Job openings slid to 5.4 million in August from a record high 5.7 million in July.

Seven categories (construction; trade, transportation and utilities; information; professional and business services; leisure and hospitality; other services; and government) added jobs over the month, gaining 16,500 jobs. The region added around 4,500 jobs each month between January and April, then shed jobs during the summer before rebounding in August.

In the past year, San Bernardino and Riverside counties have added 36,300 workers.

The industry gaining the most jobs was leisure and hospitality (+58,100 jobs, +5.3 percent).

Government (‐500 jobs); information (‐200 jobs); and mining, logging, and construction (‐100 jobs) lost jobs over the year.
