The GoPro Awards is an ongoing contest that lets users of the ubiquitous action cam profit form their work.

Rewarding customers that share photos and videos shot with their GoPro cameras is the brand’s primary objective, but a secondary motivation is finding more of those people and their content. People already upload videos tagged “GoPro” to YouTube 15,000 times a day, Mr. Lurie said. Poking around the interwebs, we’ve found five past GoPro vids we think the company should throw a few cash to. So yes, you could bag $5,000 for an wonderful video edit and then later on get another check from GoPro because they decided it was dope enough to slice into a commercial. “A key component of our programming strategy is user generated content”, explains Woodman. “And if we can help source that content and drive revenue – advertising and licensing revenue from it – we do build up our media business and are able to share more of that revenue back with users”, Mr. Lurie said. GoPro Awards will be given for memorable photos ($500), raw video clips ($1000), and video edits ($5000) in a variety of genres.

The GoPro Awards scheme will fork out up to $5 million every single year to creators of content that “emotionally engages, amazes, or excites”.

Each week, the company plans to award winners in three random categories, with no restrictions on such category. According to a report from The Verge earlier today, the company is now taking its licensing platform and making it more likeable with the introduction of the GoPro awards. GoPro will also consider using the photos and videos in its own marketing campaigns as it looks to put more money toward advertising in the fourth quarter, though it won’t be giving creators a cut.
