He reportedly is the master mind behind North Korea’s first ever beer festival.
“This Pyongyang Taedonggang Beer Festival, held on the charming and lovely Taedong riverside, is a significant occasion”, Choe Yong Nam, the director of North Korea’s General Bureau of Public Service, said in his opening address.
Launched primarily for Pyongyang citizens, the festival follows steps made by the brewery to improve access to its now famous product in other parts of the country.
In 2008, a New York Times article described the Taedonggang beer as a “full-bodied lager a little on the sweet side, with a slightly bitter aftertaste”.
The evening launch event was kicked up a notch with the addition of musical performances on the riverside and a sampling event where beer lovers judged and guessed the beers they were drinking.
The festival is being conducted despite the toughest sanctions to be imposed on the regime.
Korean Central Television was quick to use the festival to attack the country’s critics critics. Taedonggang Beer is widely considered to be the best beer in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

To celebrate the opening of the festival, 500 guests were invited to drink for free for the first two hours, before being joined by the public.
