Inside the city liberated from IS after week-long battle
On national television, Iraq’s Prime Minister warned his forces were “coming to liberate Mosul next – and deal ISIS a fatal blow”.

The speaker of Iraq’s parliament was one of the first top officials to congratulate the security forces on their victory late on Sunday. Washington had hoped that a potentially decisive battle for that city would take place in 2015 but that effort was pushed back after the fighters seized Ramadi in May.
Tikrit: Located 160km north of Baghdad, it was recaptured in April by Iraqi troops, police and Shi’ite-dominated paramilitaries.
The issue then becomes why America is doing this, almost 13 years since its initial invasion of Iraq and four years after President George W. Bush agreed with the Iraqis that the United States would withdraw its forces.

Iraqi forces, backed by US-led coalition airstrikes, had been slowed in Ramadi by explosives planted in streets and booby-trapped buildings.
Reports of Iraqi forces backed by coalition forces making gains in Ramadi had been making the rounds since last week.
Authorities have not provided casualty figures from the fighting or Ramadi.
“We will continue to support the government of Iraq as it re-establishes the security, governance and services the people of Ramadi will need as they return to their city”.
The BBC’s Thomas Fessy, who is in Ramadi, says the battle against IS has destroyed the urban landscape. Iraqi military forces on Monday retook a strategic government complex in the city of Ramadi fro…

Retaking Mosul would effectively mark the end of the caliphate proclaimed by Islamic State in adjacent Sunni areas of Iraq and Syria, according to Zebari.
