On Friday, the CBS This Morning news team got a sneak peek inside the one of a kind museum. “And, when we were dismantling the cabin, the community came out and it was Black, White, young, older men and woman who were there”. The picture will be included in a permanent exhibit.

“The group is looking forward to touring the museum on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, to be in touch with our historical past and to feel the energy of the ancestors and leaders immortalized in this great museum”, said Helen C. Othow, the coordinator of the tour.

“She was younger than the elders that she helped get the stories from”. Starting Monday Sept. 26, visitors will be able to obtain same-day passes to the museum. These exhibitions will feature some of the 36,000 artifacts collected by the institution thus far, including an 1874 log house built and inhabited by free slaves in Poolesville, Maryland.

She added part of the objective is to tell people the history of Africans in the United States, “because it’s largely unknown”.

For example, in the comedy exhibit right alongside quotes from famous black comedians such as Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx is a joke by Bill Cosby, the first African American to star in a dramatic show on network television. Founding Donor Hyundai Motor America is the primary Giving Day sponsor.

Ahead of the grand opening, here are five things you need to know about the museum.

But the newest Smithsonian museum is not a time capsule.

“[The museum] just didn’t cross my mind”. Visitors from across the United States and overseas will attend.

“African-American history did not stop with President Barack Obama’s election, and so we won’t stop there either”, Bunch said.

“I am very humbled”. Most of the moments where American liberty has been expanded have been tied to the African-American experience.

“We don’t hold back on violence during the period of slavery”, Elliott said.
