Instagram desperately wants to be the new Snapchat – here’s why
Of course, users can draw on top of clips or photos, as well as add stickers to make yourself look super creative. Instagram recently added “Stories”, a feature that pulls shared images and videos into a slideshow format. Users will be alerted to new stories from Instagrammers they follow by new content being highlighted in colourful circles in a bar at the top of their feed. Stories also allow users to mark up photos with text, drawings, and color filters. Viewers tap to move through a single story and swipe to jump between stories. To view an Instagram Story posted by a friend, all one needs to do is tap on their profile photo.

Today, Instagram announced a new feature rolling out over the next couple weeks called Instagram Stories. The Facebook-owned app has more than 500 million monthly active users, compared to a total 150 million for Snapchat. However, the Facebook-owned company gave the due credit to the pioneer of “Stories”.
In an interview to TechCrunch, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom, responding to a question about Snapchat pioneering the format, said: “Totally”.
Everyone has a story, and Instagram wants to help tell yours.
The key thing here is that is seems that Instagram is trying to foster sharing within their application. At least that is what it appears Instagram is after. “Instagram has always been a place to share the moments you want to remember”, writes Instagram in a blog post. “You can share as much as you want throughout the day-with as much creativity as you want”.

The latest update of Instagram has introduced more than what users are accustomed to. If your Instagram profile is public, anyone can see your story, a major difference that may dissuade public users from sharing as much or as personally in stories. Both show you who has seen your story. Any feedback given will have to go through direct messages, making Stories an even more private feature.
