Over the last five years, Instagram has morphed from a novelty photo-sharing service into the app-du-jour for celebrities, sports stars, influencers and everyday folks. This comes just nine months after announcing that it hit the 300 million mark.
According to Instagram, more than 75% of its users are outside the US.
Together, those users post more than 80 million photos a day, the company said. In fact, Brazil, Japan and Indonesia were the countries that most added to the new figures.
Much of Instagram’s growth has happened internationally. That stands in sharp contrast to Twitter, which continues to struggle with user growth.

Facebook also owns two other of the world’s most popular apps: WhatsApp, which it bought for billions and has 900 million users, and its homegrown app, Facebook Messenger, which has 700 million. The Menlo Park, California-based social-networking giant surprised investors when it purchased Instagram in 2012 for $ 1 billion.
