Int’l presence not needed at Jerusalem

In the video, a masked fighter praised Arabs who are attacking Israelis, describing them as “lone wolves who refused to be subdued and spread fear among the sons of Zion”. More than 40 Palestinians, including a number of attackers, have also been killed by Israeli forces during the unrest in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

An Israeli identified only by the first name Dudu told Israeli Army Radio that he regretted participating in the attack on the Eritrean man.

A wounded Eritrean man who later died of his wounds, is evacuated at the main bus station in the southern Israeli city of Beersheva on October 18, 2015, after he was mistakenly shot by an Israeli security guard and beaten by a mob.

The Sunday attack became one of the most serious incidents amid the ongoing tensions between Israel and Palestine.

“It’s awful”, Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said. Its headline said: “Just because of his skin colour”.

Paramedics were prevented from taking the man to a hospital, witnesses said.

It is the latest in a wave of violence which has seen eight Israelis killed in near-daily attacks this month.

The gunman was killed, while a security guard at the bus station shot the 26-year-old Eritrean thinking he was a second attacker. Footage also showed a mob of shouting Israelis crowded around the man as he lay in a pool of blood.

Ethioscope identified the man as Mulu Habtom Zerhoma. While security officials attempted to stave off the crowd, one Israeli threw a bench at Zarhum, others kicked him. “That’s the only change in the status quo”.

But Sunday night’s mob scene at the bus station in the southern city of Beersheba took things to a new level. It is more of Israeli militarization than addressing the real causes. On Monday, they said there had been no other attacker and an investigation had been opened into the migrant’s death.

The attacker was identified by police as Mohannad Al-Aqaby, 21, an Arab-Israeli citizen from the area. She said the officers shot and killed the teenager after he tried to stab them. Police spokeswoman Luba Samri says Sunday the slabs were placed there for security reasons, without elaborating. The Israeli IBA network posted footage of the attack, purportedly recorded by a surveillance camera.

Diplomatic moves to halt the more than two weeks of unrelenting violence gained steam, meanwhile, with US Secretary of State John Kerry saying he planned to meet both the Israeli and Palestinian leaders in the coming days. After sealing off East Jerusalem neighborhoods last week, Israel is widening its crackdown on Arab residents and continuing military operations across the West Bank and Gaza.

Netanyahu has said his government is committed to maintaining the status quo at the compound, which has always been under Muslim religious administration while Jews are permitted to visit the site but not pray there.

Organizers believe that Standing Together, a new group formed in response to the current violence, would offer Israelis and Palestinians an alternative to violence.
