Meanwhile, at the OpenStack Summit in May, Intel disclosed various contributions it is making to OpenStack, including improving the security of containerised applications in the cloud using the VT-x extensions in its processors.

As per Forrester, a consultancy for technology research, OpenStack has become the fifth most popular cloud platform among Global 2000 enterprises.

“With Intel as our partner, we’ll show the world that open design, open development and open licensing is the future of cloud infrastructure software”. Mirantis’ objective is to ensure that OpenStack is the best method to supply cloud software, outperforming available proprietary solutions.

The technology collaboration with Intel will focus on adding increased capabilities for enterprise deployments.

As part of that effort Mirantis plans to help refine all the components of OpenStack in a series of stages that will ultimately enable IT organizations to fire up as many as 2,000 OpenStack nodes right out of the box.

Specifically, the two firms will address problems around performance at scale, storage, network integration and support for big data analytics in OpenStack.

The deepened Intel collaboration follows a record-breaking year for Mirantis.

In 2014, there was a lot of action happened in OpenStack industry. The company also opened new offices in Amsterdam, Austin, Grenoble, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

While Freedland said it’s important that the OpenStack community continue to partner with providers of other technologies, it’s also critically important that OpenStack be able to compete against VMware and Microsoft by offering as many native services as possible.

The company specialises in the provision of software, services, training and support to enterprises intent on running large-scale production deployments of OpenStack. Intel has declined to name the products in order to maintain relations with other companies.

Investment in Mirantis could help make OpenStack a more viable competitor to public cloud giants such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Mirantis is venture-backed by August Capital, Ericsson, Intel Capital, Insight Venture Partners, Sapphire Ventures and WestSummit Capital, with headquarters in Mountain View, California.
