Intel President Renee James to leave chipmaker

Renée James, the president of Intel, on Thursday announced her intention to step down from the board of the U.S. semiconductor chip giant to pursue an external chief executive role. This integration will deliver better technologies for our customers and more effective operations that enable Intel Security to advance the state of security across the industry. The departures signal where Krzanich believes the company is doing well and where it needs fresh blood. The company’s mobile business has also been struggling.

With James’ efforts, Intel expanded its chip business for PC and server markets as well as stepped into the emerging world of wearables with partnering some of the key participants in the new sector. Starting in September, they will run the investment arm of Intel jointly until Sodhani leaves.

Her departure was announced with other leadership changes that show Krzanich is putting his stamp on the company and parting ways with deputies of his predecessor, Paul Otellini. She served the company for over the past 28 years and was the executive vice president and general manager of the Software and Services Group before getting named for the President role. Her job was to make sure his laptop worked right, and that his Powerpoints didn’t inexplicably fail when he was giving speeches.

During her past two years as president, James has been second in-command to CEO Brian Krzanich.

The change will set off a new succession question for Intel, though Krzanich will be the top boss for the foreseeable future.

Intel executives Hermann Eul and Mike Bell will leave Intel.
