Intel recalls fitness watch, ends support due to overheating
“We had hoped to update the software on your watch to address the problem”, Walden wrote.

Basis first confirmed the issue in June when users started reporting that the Peak tracker was causing “discomfort, blistering, or burns” to the wrist.
Intel hasn’t specified a deadline by when customers should return their Basis smartwatches but urges people to return them “as soon as possible”. “Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we aren’t able to develop such a solution without completely compromising the user experience”, he says.
Intel Corp. has issued a safety recall of its Basis Peak fitness watch after it was discovered that it could burn the person wearing it.
But today it has taken the major step of not only issuing a total recall for the product but it is also closing down the online service that lets people synch their fitness data in an effort to ensure people stop wearing the potentially risky device.
If you’re a Basis Peak owner, you can return the wearable and any accessories to the company for a full refund. Even if you’re in love with your Peak tracker and refuse to send it back, syncing with the device will no longer be supported after December 31 of this year.
In the US, Basis Titanium owners will receive $344, made up of $299 for the watch, $30 in tax, and $15 in shipping.
One Basis Science spokesman said that Intel is not planning for a replacement product soon for the defective Peak fitness watches, the Wall Street Journal reported. European and Canadian users can see the breakdown of refunds at the official website linked above.

Any official, authorized accessories purchased – such as straps or extra charging cradles – will also be refunded in full. Basis apologized in the statement, saying it was now concerned for customer’s safety.
