The company where Escalante was employed as an intern, health company Isagenix, did not find any humor in the tweet and quickly fired her after only two hours.
The tweet gained a lot of traction over the weekend, sparking outrage from people all across the country.
“I deleted it, but it was much too late”, Escalante told Fox 10 Phoenix. Now she’s apologizing, saying she did not mean to offend anyone. Within minutes Isagenix denounced her behavior and said she was no longer with the company via Twitter.
Erika Escalante, a student from Katy, Texas, who attends Chandler-Gilbert Community College, brought great shame to her internship position at Isagenix, a dietary supplements and personal care products company, when she chose to share a photo of her and a friend picking cotton, all the while claiming it brought out their “inner n****r”.
“We were shocked when we saw, it’s not what you would expect”, said spokesman Kevin Snyder.
Erika Escalante, 20, is apologizing after tweeting the above image and caption.
She told the news station that she is not a racist and the tweet was a lack of “better judgment”.
Escalante immediately deleted her account and perceivably had a friend create another one, which tweeted out Giuliana Rancic’s public apology to Zendaya, word for word. “I was not thinking at all”, said Escalante.
