The new unit is part of IBM’s effort to advance connected devices and cognitive computing.
These include the Natural Language Processing API, which contextualises language from context and is able to respond in the same simple way; Machine Learning Watson API, which can establish patterns in order to perform a repeated task better each time or change the method to suit; Video and Image Analytics API, which can infer information from video feeds; and Text Analytics Watson API, which can glean information from unstructured text data such as Twitter feeds. The campus is expected to house a total of 1000 IBM developers, consultants, researchers and designers.
Businesses and developers will get the opportunity to build off the APIs being offered by IBM’s Watson.
The American technology giant will give customers who wish to develop and create next generation cognitive IoT apps direct access to the cloud-based platform – a move IBM has baptised “Industry 4.0 Innovation”. The centers will be in Beijing, China; Boeblingen, Germany; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Seoul, Korea; Tokyo, Japan; and Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Texas in the U.S.
Machine learning API: this API is capable of prioritizing data after learning patterns from the continuous interaction with data from devices.
IBM is promoting Watson as a more flexible computing platform for crunching real-time unstructured data. As companies race to digitise in a complex environment consisting of new customer needs and competitive challenges, there is significant potential for cognitive systems like Watson to work with humans to augment human intelligence and scale expertise across industries. Cognitive systems can make sense of the 80 percent of the worlds data that computer scientists call unstructured, which means they can illuminate aspects of the world that were previously invisible, allowing users to gain greater insight and to make more informed decisions. The company plans to acquire Weather.com, which will help improve the Watson IoT.
