International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women

On November 25 and throughout the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence” to December 10, I call on all Jamaicans to positively engage on this issue of violence against women.

Lit orange to mark the International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women on Wednesday, the India Gate here on Wednesday joined Egypt’s Sphinx and Pyramids and New York’s Empire State Building as iconic monuments highlighting the UN’s “Orange the World” campaign.

Women’s activists have marked 25 November as a day against violence since 1981.

Political, social and economic empowerment of women in Zimbabwe is vital in tackling gender-based violence, British Ambassador to Zimbabwe Catriona Laing has said. The walkathon, which will start at Kanakakunnu here at 7 am, will end at Government Women’s College in Vazhuthacaud. By taking the pledge, Canadians can show that they care about making Canada safer for all women and girls – no matter who they are or where they live.

The objective of the campaign is to trigger a national discourse and debate and galvanise action to prevent violence against women and girls, provide help when it is needed, and guarantee laws that protect women and girls.

Club members of Soroptimist International of Darlington and District have been wearing the colour orange in locations all over the world to raise awareness of violence against women.

According to United Nations statistics, an estimated 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence – mostly by an intimate partner.

On the same occasion, the General Women’s Union branch in Aleppo organized a solidarity stand to protest terrorists’ practices against women in Syria, particularly minors. We further call on virginity custom to be abolished, as it exposes the girl-child rape, incest, abuse and sexual violence. We collectively feel the pain when one of our sisters is mentally and/or physically harmed and recognize the impact that this has on our society.
