The United Nations has found its newest honorary ambassador in the form of a very angry, red bird who isn’t too pleased about climate change.

In order to mark the International Day of Happiness on March 20, the United Nations has named Red, the animated character in the yet to be released “The Angry Birds Movie” as an honorary United Nations ambassador.

The International Day of Happiness recognizes that Gross Domestic Product alone can not measure the wealth and well-being of a country’s population and a more inclusive, equitable, balanced and sustainable approach to growth and development is key to being happy. He added that United Nations way of celebrating the International Day of Happiness couldn’t have had a better representative to increase public awareness about climate change.

Mr Ban announced Red, the hot-tempered lead in the game and movie, as ambassador for the UN-endorsed International Day of Happiness, held around the world on March 20 and aimed at encouraging action against climate change.

Their faces were familiar and their plan was to charm United Nations’ boss Ban Ki-moon.

Distributed by Colombia Pictures, “Angry Birds” will open across the Philippines on May 11.

Mr Ban, who posed with the feathered characters from the movie on the green carpet, said: “The Angry Birds have entertained millions of people around the world – and now they are part of making the world a better place”.

And starting March 21, “Red” will go on a “virtual world tour” to help people take notice of the various ways in which climate change can be fought. Check out more about Angry Birds for Happy Planet campaign over here.
