The 54-year-old comedian later wrote: ‘My Twitter seems to have turned into an automatic press release.

If a diverse show achieves success, Brown says, other networks’ reactions will be, “Get me the next one”.

“Wow, the acting categories are VERY white this year”.

None of the nominated Best Picture films in the major categories feature people of colour. Cube shrugged off news that “Straight Outta Compton”, directed by himself hasn’t been nominated at Oscars for best picture, saying ‘we ain’t anxious about it, ‘ ‘We good, though’. Director Ryan Coogler of the successful “Rocky” spinoff “Creed” also failed to make the cut. Naming Cheryl Boone Isaacs, an African-American marketing executive, as its president was a good step. We’re used to the industry looking down on us. Just because white people aren’t represented in a particular film doesn’t make it OK for us to forget about it during awards season in favour of a more more “relatable” film. “We will not sit idly by and allow our community to be disregarded”. Only the director of “The Revenant”, Alejandro Inarritu from Mexico, broke into the all-white crowd. After the whole debacle with “Selma” and Ava DuVernay, you would have thought some lessons would have been learned.

Many tweeted their disapproval on Thursday. Sylvester Stallone may have earned a nomination for his reprisal of Rocky Balboa in Creed, but star Michael B. Jordan’s performance did not. Los Angeles, the company town for the film and entertainment industry, is known for being one of the largest and most nationally diverse cities in the world, but people of color are systematically denied jobs and education in film production and all its related areas of production and distribution. “It is not being ignored, and there’s a lot of us working at a more grassroots level to try to turn the tides”.

As cultural critic Mark Harris noted, this marks the first time there have been no black acting nominees two years in a row since 1997-1998, so maybe it represents a dip and not a pattern. “We must take direct action to correct this. It’s a huge victory”.

Will Smith was not nominated for his performance in “Concussion”.

Nearly immediately after the nominations were announced Thursday morning, the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite surfaced on social media again – just as it did in 2015. That said, it did go on to receive a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Jackson and Idris Elba were also snubbed for their roles in The Hateful Eight and Beasts of No Nation, respectively. The Oakland Tribune ran a headline that read, “And the Oscar for best Caucasian goes to…”
