Internet, the global platform that connects humans and machines, was comissioned 25 years ago today.

“The creation of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee enabled non-technical computer experts to use the Internet in a simple and quick way, making it accessible to billions of people around the world”, the Internaught website explains.

And it wasn’t much more than a few pages of text with some hyperlinks – describing what the World Wide Web was envisioned to be. On 23 August, 1991, the public accessed World Wide Web for the first time. It was during this time that Berners-Lee delved into the uses of hypertext. ARPANET was the internet in its baby stages, before it bloomed into the large directory of information that we know today and so, initially consisted of limited networks.

Tim Berners-Lee, 43, director of the World Wide Web Consortium at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass., poses in his office Monday, June 1, 1998.

Before the world wide web, other protocols existed for transferring information over the internet, but the web quickly surpassed them in popularity. He also developed HTML or HyperText Markup Language, the URI or Uniform Resource Identifier, the first-ever browser and server for the web, and the first-ever web pages. It was first developed two years earlier by Tim Berners-Lee, an English scientist who was working for CERN- the European Center for Nuclear Research. This day, nearly 25 years ago – Internet became basis of our communication and information exchange. While the first page was only accessible to CERN members, the first publicly available web page was accessed on August 23, 1991.

Internet, even after 25 years of its development and deployment, is underserved at best.

“Had the technology been proprietary, and in my total control, it would probably not have taken off”. Later the web is opened to the public.
