Apple announced Tuesday it is partnering with Donate Life America to include a button to its Health app letting iPhone users enroll in the National Donate Life Registry.

The Apple CEO told Associated Press that Mr Jobs “endured an excruciating wait for a liver transplant in 2009”. The Apple CEO back then had to register for receiving an organ transplant in his home town of Tennessee, after doctors had highlighted that there is a huge waiting line for a liver in California. The new mobile operating system update is expected to land sometime in the fall, mostly in September, when Apple rolls out its next iPhone and mobile OS.
Apple is among a growing number of large tech companies using their social media power to expand organ donation awareness and registrations.
Apple is planning to play its part in the drive to propagate organ donation in the United States, says CNBC. The association represents and serves OPOs through advocacy, support and the development of activities that will maximize the availability of organs and tissues for transplantation and enhance the quality, effectiveness and integrity of the donation process.
Apple is to offer U.S. iPhone-users an easy opt-in to join the national organ donor registry as part of its iOS update later this year. Desperate people wait for years to get a transplant so they could go on living, while only a lucky few get a second chance at life by receiving a transplant. However, despite all these efforts, there are still over 120,000 Americans now waiting for a life saving transplant – and a new person is added to the list every ten minutes. This is where Donate Life America comes in, as the non-profit is responsible for maintaining the Registry and updating it as new donors sign up. He died of pancreatic cancer in 2011.

The option will be facilitated through a button in the health app, it is also this button that allows users to view and manage their health and fitness data. With iOS 10, this function will also contain donor information.
